2011 Victorian Open

Victorian Doubles
Playing with Pete Landrebe in the doubles on day one we won three games from four matches, only losing to Kevin and Trish due to an error I made when setting the leave. Attempted one triple, blobbed in 2back, however finished with a straight double and a bombard pegged out. Still feeling the leg back muscles after doing my hamstring prior to Christmas, however the walking is doing it some good.
Day two of the doubles Peter and I won 3 from 3 to finish second behind Kevin and Tricia. Made some good breaks and attempted another triple. Enjoyed playing with Pete and learning aspects of doubles play and different tactics. We also won seven out of seven coin tosses. 🙂

Victorian singles
Won 4 of 4 games today to be equal first in the block. Still feeling the thigh and back muscles, but generally okay. Won four of four coin tosses. 🙂
Day two of the singles saw me winning 2 of 3 games played, after having a very good chance against Kevin Beard in very testing conditions. Won 2 of the three coin tosses. 🙂
Day three. Played a great game versus Robert Fletcher only to blob hoop three when going for the triple. Played an average game versus Ian Bassett but still qualified for the knockout finals.

Playing against Greg Fletcher I won the first game, he won the second game with a sixth turn triple. Greg should have finished with a triple in the third however broke down making rover to let me in. I then played error-free from hoops 1 and 3 to eventually be peg and penult, deliberately setting the leave so Greg would be looking directly into the sun (he wears glasses) if he was to take the short shot. However Greg hit the longshot (25 yards) to finish the decider 26-22.

Overall a good tournament, the lack of practice showed but the hamstring/back is doing okay.

2010 Nationals

November 2010
National Double & Singles, Cairnlea Croquet Centre, Victoria

First day of doubles
One for games. Went for TPO in the first game, good ball control but missed a simple roquet, giving Trev a 4 inch roquet on B-baulk (Given his current form he had a 60% chance of hitting it). Enjoying playing with Basil, certainly different being the lead partner. Good win versus Kevin and Wendy. Barbecue with Claire, Trev, Tim, Jenny, Basil and Martin.
Second day lost to Wise/Kingdom combination in a very awful match, Wise Continue reading

2010 NSW Bronze Medal

My goal at the beginning of the year was to ay in the Bronze medal. Thanks to Tim Murphy who helped me and made me answer the question “what do I have to do to become a Bronze medal player?”.
Narrowly missing the rankings , I had to win the Selectors 10, so had to play the top seeds on the first day.
Game 1 v Pete Landrebe. Won the opening and made 9. Pete missed the leave, Continue reading

2010 Selectors 10

Only had 8 competitors this year with main rivals being Alan Honey and Mike Hughes, the three of us all on handicap of zero compared to the rest of the field ranging from 3 – 6.

All games for me went as planned on the first two days, including defeating Mike 26 – 9 and a triple peel. Alan had a close call against Trevor Black however also finished the two days undefeated.

2010 NSW Mens Championships

Played at a number of different venues with a field of 18 in 2 blocks of 9. Superhoops were also used at Tempe for the first time in a NSW event.

Day 1 started with a couple of good wins over Martyn Prins and Alan Walsh which triggered another handicap level, so now playing off scratch. Lost the third game of the day to Tim Murphy after been hampered out of hoop 1 and missing. Lost 1 – 26tp.

Rich River Classic

Have played in this event previously and always enjoy playing at Rich River (Echuca – Moama) and the drive across the Riverina Plains through Conargo.

Played on one of the best surfaces in Australia, with relatively easy hoops, one can only blame one’s self for errors.

Started with a triple peel and then put down the opportunity for another in the Continue reading

Wagga Wagga Club Championship

Won all 5 games conceding only 17 hoops with 2 triple peels. Off to compete in the NSW Champion of Champions in June.

Armstrong Trophy 2010

Was thrilled to get an invitation to play in the Armstrong Trophy, an event named after Tom & Jean Armstrong and are both still alive. I think Tom is 100 and Jean 98. Being in Adelaide also gives me the chance to catch up with my family – mum lives only 3 blocks up the street from the Brighton Croquet Club.

Also my first tournament playing with my new pidcock. Continue reading

2010 Australian Mens Championship

Round 1 defeated Brad Maguire 26 -18, 26 -3.

Round 2 lost to Robert Fletcher 1 – 26tp, 26 – 0, 0 – 26tp.
Was a good battle against Robert, narrowly missing out on a triple peel in game 2. Made a mistake after hitting the lift in the third game which Robert then Continue reading
